Does Google Favor Big Business Websites?
One of the most popular misconceptions I hear is from small business owners is that they think they’ll never be listed near the top of Google in their town because of the competition from large businesses with large budgets. If you do a Google search for “hamburgers near me” or “coffee shop near me”, you might be surprised to find a small local business outranks McDonalds or Starbucks in Google’s local searches.
Search Engine’s “Local” Searches
When you are looking for a local business on line, you might notice that Google provides a box just below their ads with up to 3 local businesses with a link for more. It is much easier to get your local business listed in that section than it is for a large company to do so.
Google My Business
The key to improving your local small business with Google is their “Google My Business” (GMB) section. Go to https://business.google.com to see if your business is listed. If you are the authorized admin for your business and are logged in to Google, you can make updates such as adding photos, hours of operation, special events, etc. If you keep your listing in GMB current, you will make Google happy. And a happy Google translates to better rankings.
